Ar-Raqīb (الرَّقِيب), "The Vigilant One," "The Attentive Observer," is one of the most beautiful Names of Allah. It designates the One from whom nothing escapes the gaze: neither the public act, nor the hidden gesture, nor the thought that crosses the heart. Far from being an overwhelming surveillance, this vigilance is that of a Lord who knows His servants in order to protect them, reward them with justice, and answer their needs even before they express them.
What does Ar-Raqīb mean?
The name Ar-Raqīb comes from the Arabic root rā'-qāf-bā' (ر ق ب), which expresses careful observation and vigilant watch. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- Total observation: Allah sees every deed and hears every word, in every place and at every moment — no secret exists before Him.
- Knowledge of hearts: His vigilance reaches what no other perceives, intentions, desires, and intimate thoughts.
- Benevolent protection: Ar-Raqīb does not merely observe; He preserves His creatures and keeps the exact account of all things for perfect justice.
Ar-Raqīb in the Qur'an
This Name opens Surah An-Nisā', in a verse that is often recited at the opening of sermons:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَيْكُمْ رَقِيبًا
"Fear Allah, in whose name you implore one another, and fear to break the bonds of kinship. Verily, Allah watches over you perfectly." (Surah An-Nisā', 4:1)
And the prophet 'Īsā (Jesus) will say to Allah on the Day of Judgment:
"I did not tell them except what You commanded me: worship Allah, my Lord and your Lord. And I was a witness against them as long as I remained among them. Then when You recalled me, it was You who were their Observer (ar-Raqīb), and You are witness to all things." (Surah Al-Mā'ida, 5:117)
The Qur'an adds: "Allah watches over all things perfectly" (Surah Al-Ahzāb, 33:52). Human witnesses pass away; the divine Witness remains.
The hadith of ihsān: murāqaba
When the angel Jibrīl asked the Prophet ﷺ about excellence (ihsān), he replied: "It is that you worship Allah as if you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He sees you." (reported by Al-Bukhārī and Muslim)
This statement establishes murāqaba: the permanent consciousness of the divine gaze. The entire spiritual journey rests on this shift — moving from "no one sees me" to "Ar-Raqīb sees me".

1. The Same Conduct in Public and in Secret
The true test of sincerity is solitude: what one does when no creature is watching. Whoever lives with Ar-Raqīb maintains the same uprightness behind closed doors — in what he looks at, consumes, and thinks — because the essential Witness is never absent.
2. Honesty in Transactions
Commerce, work, inheritance, debts: divine vigilance is the foundation of the believer's ethics. No need for cameras or inspectors — Ar-Raqīb sees the hidden merchandise, the false scale, the hidden clause. To work under His gaze is the best guarantee of integrity.
3. Watching Over One's Own Heart
To be inspired by this Name is to become vigilant towards oneself: to observe one's intentions before one's actions, to ask oneself "for whom am I doing this?". This self-vigilance (muhāsaba) is the discipline of the virtuous, far more fruitful than surveillance of the faults of others.
Invocation with the Name Ar-Raqīb
Allah says: "To Allah belong the most beautiful Names. Call upon Him by these Names" (Surah Al-A'rāf, 7:180). One can turn to Him saying: "Yā Raqīb, You who see me when no one sees me, make Your gaze prevent me from sin and encourage me towards good; watch over me, my family, and what You have entrusted to me." The Prophet ﷺ also recommended this continuous God-consciousness: "Fear Allah wherever you are" (reported by At-Tirmidhī).
