Al-Wāsi' (الوَاسِع), "The Infinitely Vast," "He whose knowledge, mercy, and gifts encompass all things," is one of the Most Beautiful Names of Allah. When the heart feels constrained — by sin, need, or trial — this Name opens an immense window: with Allah, there is always something vaster than our distress, more expansive than our faults, greater than our hopes.
What does Al-Wāsi' mean?
The name Al-Wāsi' comes from the Arabic root wāw-sīn-'ayn (و س ع), which expresses amplitude, capacity, and absence of limit — the root of the word sa'a (generosity, ease). Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- The knowledge that embraces all things: His knowledge encompasses all things, past, present, and future — which is why the Quran often associates Wāsi' and 'Alīm.
- The mercy that covers all things: "My mercy encompasses all things" (7:156); no sinner is too far, no fault too great for it.
- Generosity without depletion: His treasures do not diminish; He enriches whom He wills with His generosity, and giving to all takes nothing from Him.
Al-Wāsi' in the Quran
Allah says:
وَلِلَّهِ الْمَشْرِقُ وَالْمَغْرِبُ ۚ فَأَيْنَمَا تُوَلُّوا فَثَمَّ وَجْهُ اللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ وَاسِعٌ عَلِيمٌ
« To Allah belong the East and the West. Wherever you turn, there is the Face of Allah. Allah is indeed All-Encompassing (Wāsi') and All-Knowing. » (Surah Al-Baqara, 2:115)
And the angels who carry the Throne invoke thus:
رَبَّنَا وَسِعْتَ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ رَّحْمَةً وَعِلْمًا
« Our Lord! You encompass all things in mercy and knowledge. So forgive those who repent and follow Your way. » (Surah Ghāfir, 40:7)
The Throne verse proclaims it also: « His Footstool (Kursī) encompasses (wasi'a) the heavens and the earth » (Surah Al-Baqara, 2:255). If the Kursī surpasses the visible universe, what can be said of the vastness of Him to whom it belongs?
Living with Al-Wāsi' in Daily Life
1. Never despair of mercy
Sin narrows the heart; Al-Wāsi' reopens it. The angels themselves invoke for the repentant by this Name (40:7): the mercy that encompasses all things also encompasses your fault, as long as you return. Despair is an error of measure — we measure Allah's generosity by the standard of our narrowness.
2. Expand your heart and your hand
To be inspired by this Name is to refuse narrowness: in judging others, in forgiveness, in spending. Whoever believes in the limitless treasures of Al-Wāsi' gives without fearing lack and excuses without fearing loss of face.
3. Think broadly in times of trial
When one door closes — a job, a project, a hope — the believer remembers 2:115: "Whichever way you turn, there is the Face of Allah." The paths of Allah are more numerous than our plans. Sustenance, healing, and relief can come from where we least expected.
Supplication with the Name Al-Wāsi'
The most beautiful supplication by this Name is that of the angels bearing the Throne: « Rabbanā wasi'ta kulla shay'in rahmatan wa 'ilmā, fa-ghfir li-lladhīna tābū wa-ttaba'ū sabīlak » — « Our Lord! You encompass all things in mercy and knowledge: forgive those who repent and follow Your way » (Surah Ghāfir, 40:7). In accordance with verse 7:180, you can also say: « O Al-Wāsi', expand my chest, my sustenance and my share of Your mercy, and admit me into the vastness of Your forgiveness. »

Because divine immensity first manifests itself in knowledge: "Allah is Vast and All-Knowing" appears repeatedly in the Quran (notably 2:115, 2:261). His vastness is not indiscriminate — He gives abundantly and knows perfectly to whom, when, and how.
What exactly does Allah's "vastness" encompass?
Scholars explain it through His attributes: knowledge, mercy, generosity, power, and limitless forgiveness. It means that no need exhausts Him, that no creature is beyond His reach, and that no sin exceeds His forgiveness.
