Ar-Razzāq (الرَّزَّاق), "The One Who Grants Sustenance," "The Provider par excellence," is one of the most beautiful Names of Allah. It designates The One Who nourishes every creature — from the embryo in its mother's womb to the fish in the depths — and Who provides not only for the needs of the body, but also for those of the heart and soul. To meditate on this Name is to heal from tomorrow's anxiety.
What Does Ar-Razzāq Mean?
The name Ar-Razzāq comes from the Arabic root rā-zāy-qāf (ر ز ق), which designates the act of providing, of granting sustenance (rizq). Its intensive form indicates the abundance and constancy of this gift. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- The Universal Provider: no creature is forgotten — Allah ensures the sustenance of every living being, believer or not, visible or hidden.
- The Master of all forms of rizq: food and wealth, but also health, knowledge, children, peace of heart and, even more so, faith and guidance.
- He Who distributes with wisdom: He expands sustenance for whom He wills and measures it for whom He wills, according to a wisdom that aims at the well-being of each.
Ar-Razzāq in the Quran
Allah says:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ هُوَ الرَّزَّاقُ ذُو الْقُوَّةِ الْمَتِينُ
« Verily, it is Allah who is the Great Provider, the Possessor of Strength, the Firm. » (Surah Adh-Dhāriyāt, 51:58)
And regarding the extent of His provision:
« There is not an animal on earth but that Allah is responsible for its provision. » (Surah Hūd, 11:6)
The Prophet ﷺ illustrated this trust through an unforgettable image: « If you placed your trust in Allah as He deserves, He would grant you your provision as He grants it to the birds: they leave in the morning with empty bellies and return in the evening satisfied. » (reported by At-Tirmidhī). The bird does not remain in the nest — it goes out to seek: tawakkul is not inaction, it is effort accomplished with a trusting heart.
Living with Ar-Razzāq in Daily Life
1. Work Without Anxiety
He who knows that his rizq is written with Allah works with seriousness but without panic. He does not humble himself for a salary, does not betray for a deal: what is destined for him will not be missed, and what misses him was not destined for him.
2. Never Earn Through the Unlawful
Believing in Ar-Razzāq means refusing to seek His provision in His disobedience. Usurious interest, fraud, commercial deception increase nothing: blessing (baraka) descends only upon lawful earnings, even if modest.
3. Spend to Attract Rizq
Allah says: "And whatever you spend, He will replace it, and He is the Best of providers." (Surah Saba', 34:39). Sadaqa does not impoverish: it opens the doors of provision — this is the promise of the Provider Himself.
Invocation with the name Ar-Razzāq
The Prophet ﷺ taught this invocation: اللَّهُمَّ اكْفِنِي بِحَلَالِكَ عَنْ حَرَامِكَ وَأَغْنِنِي بِفَضْلِكَ عَمَّنْ سِوَاكَ
"O Allah, suffice me with what is lawful over what is unlawful, and enrich me through Your grace so that I have need of no one but You." (reported by At-Tirmidhī). You may also supplicate: "Yā Razzāq, urzuqnī rizqan halālan tayyiban" — "O Provider, grant me a lawful and pure sustenance."

What exactly does the word "rizq" cover?
Rizq goes far beyond money and food: health, time, knowledge, a pious spouse, children, peace of heart — and the most precious of all rizq: faith and guidance. Each person receives a rizq tailored to them, according to divine wisdom.
Why do some receive more than others?
Allah expands or measures subsistence according to a wisdom that often escapes us: abundance is a test of gratitude, restriction a test of patience. The value of a servant is not measured by their material rizq, but by their piety.
