Al-Qābid (القَابِض), "The One Who Withholds," "The One Who Restricts," is one of Allah's Names that tradition always cites alongside its twin: Al-Bāsit, "The One Who Expands." It designates The One Who restricts sustenance, withholds souls, contracts hearts — according to perfect wisdom. To understand this Name is to learn to traverse periods of restriction without despair: the hand that withholds is the same as the one that gives.
What does Al-Qābid mean?
The name Al-Qābid comes from the Arabic root qāf-bā-dād (ق ب ض), which evokes the act of grasping, tightening, contracting. Applied to Allah, this Name designates:
- He who tightens provision: He measures the rizq for whom He wills, not out of stinginess — He is the Absolute Rich — but out of wisdom and mercy toward His servant.
- He who seizes souls: at the appointed hour, it is He who withholds souls at death, as He withholds them each night in sleep.
- He who contracts hearts: the inner states of the believer — fervor or spiritual dryness — are in His hands, an alternation willed so that the servant never relies upon himself.
Al-Qābid in the Quran
Allah says:
وَاللَّهُ يَقْبِضُ وَيَبْسُطُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ
« And Allah restricts and extends (His favors), and to Him you will be returned. » (Surah Al-Baqara, 2:245)
And regarding the wisdom of measure:
« If Allah extended His provision to (all) His servants, they would commit abuse on the earth; but He sends down in measure what He wills. He is, toward His servants, All-Knowing and All-Seeing. » (Surah Ash-Shūrā, 42:27)
In a famous hadith, when the Prophet ﷺ was asked to fix prices during a time of scarcity, he replied: « It is Allah who is the One who fixes prices, the One who withholds (Al-Qābid), the One who extends (Al-Bāsit), the Provider… » (reported by Abū Dāwūd and At-Tirmidhī). Abundance and restriction are in the hands of Allah alone.
Living with Al-Qābid in Daily Life
1. Reading the wisdom behind restriction
Income tightening, suspended project, closing door: the servant of Al-Qābid does not see there an abandonment, but a measure weighed by He who knows — "it may be that you hate a thing and it is good for you" (Surah Al-Baqara, 2:216).
2. Crossing spiritual drought without letting go
Hearts too experience tightening: days when prayer seems heavy, when fervor is absent. These states pass as they came. The believer maintains his acts of worship in contraction as in expansion — this is where sincerity is proven.
3. Keeping your hand open when His tightens
Prophetic paradox: it is in hardship that charity has the most value. Giving little when one has little is to testify that one truly believes that sustenance comes from Allah, not from the bank account.
Invocation with the Name Al-Qābid
Scholars recommend invoking this Name with its complement, like the hadith that associates them: « Yā Qābid, yā Bāsit » — « O You who withholds, O You who expands ». In times of hardship, one can say, in accordance with verse 7:180: يَا قَابِضُ يَا بَاسِطُ ابْسُطْ عَلَيَّ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ
« O You who withholds, O You who expands, expand upon me from Your grace » — while joining it with patience and trust in His measure.

Is restriction a sign of divine anger?
No, not necessarily. Allah tightens the provision of the believer He loves as well as the one He tests: it is sometimes protection (42:27), sometimes purification, sometimes elevation. The sign to observe is not the extent of rizq, but the state of the heart facing it.
How do you invoke Allah by this Name?
In financial difficulty or contraction of the heart, one invokes: « Yā Qābid, yā Bāsit », asking for openness — and one reminds oneself that it is to Him that all things return (2:245): hardship as well as ease are but stages of the journey.
